The reference photo for this beautiful painting was taken by my friend Leah Kawiti of a young woman she met in Botswana while doing volunteer work there.
As soon as I saw the photo I knew I had to paint her for the direct composition and for her huge mesmerising eyes. Instead of my usual half face/face to one side portraits, I wanted to emphasize her eyes so her face is front and centre. I also did not add any detail to her black top so that Gaone’s face and eyes are the sole focus.
This was a piece I painted for my very first exhibition in March 2020. The original is acrylic on canvas.
