This Kingfisher, or Kōtare, was the first painting I did after a very long art block during Covid 2020/21. I was so anxious I just couldn’t paint, even though I knew it would’ve helped my mental health.
Then, during New Zealand’s second nationwide lockdown in August 2021, a fellow Coromandel Peninsula artist, Birdy Design, did some live Instagram workshops and I decided to join in with my kids.
It was just what I needed to kickstart my creativity again, and I carried on with a few birds like Racheal’s Flamingo and Nelly’s Peacock in that style. Original is watercolour and acrylic paint pens on watercolour paper.
