For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to paint this scene. Deep in the heart of the forest, two kiwi birds guard their precious egg. On a protected bird island in New Zealand, free from predators, they thrive. Kiwis once roamed freely, but the arrival of humans and mammals put many of our native birds at risk. Thankfully, conservation efforts have given hope. Wildlife parks and protected islands are now dedicated to preserving these unique birds, including the kiwi, kakapo, and takahe. This painting, “Kiwi Nest,” is my way of celebrating their journey and the importance of protecting Aotearoa’s natural beauty.
