This painting was inspired by the quiet beauty of a coastal New Zealand town. In my painting, I portray New Zealanders as Kiwi birds, blending everyday moments with a touch of symbolism and storytelling. The scene is based on a photograph I took while travelling through the North Island of New Zealand, re-imagined to reflect nostalgia, quiet observation, and the simple beauty of small town life. I painted this scene to capture the stillness and gentle anticipation of an early Sunday morning. Many New Zealand seaside and inland towns, life begins slowly.

Above a small bakery, a family of sparrows waits on a rooftop, drawn by the comforting aroma of freshly baked bread, hoping for crumbs from a brown paper bag holding a hot mince and cheese pie. The town is still asleep, wrapped in calm and silence.
As the morning unfolds, the crisp sea breeze carries the scent of salt in the air. A distant motorbike hums briefly through the streets before fading away, its echo bouncing softly between the buildings. The rising sun casts a warm orange glow across shop windows, stretching shadows along the footpath. Through the glass, a hardware store displays fishing tackle, while nearby a craft shop showcases woollen tea cozies and delicate porcelain Victorian dolls. Closer to the café, the rich aroma of bacon and eggs drifts outward, inviting the first signs of life into the day.
