Destina Munro

Destina Munro is a Wellington-based photographic artist whose work is inspired by light and colour in and around her home and immediate environment. Having taught photojournalism for many years, she has a deep commitment to documenting reality; however, when she seeks to slow her world down, her practice becomes more meditative, focused on observing how light shifts and plays through domestic spaces, gardens, and expansive sunsets.

Much of Destina’s work explores non-literal ways of seeing. Out of focus, diffused or using intentional camera movement, creating atmospheric and luminous abstract landscapes that evoke mood rather than description. These images invite viewers to linger, reflect, and experience light as an emotional presence.

Alongside this, Destina has explored architectural abstraction, merging constructed forms with atmospheric textures to examine the tension between built environments and the fleeting qualities of light, space, and mood.

Later in life, she consolidated her artistic practice by completing a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Arts, majoring in Photography. She is a Licentiate Honours member of the Photographic Society of New Zealand.
