I had seen and heard a mātātā (fernbird) calling from the top of a coprosma bush at my local wildlife sanctuary and was determined to capture the action. One morning, the bird was there and the light was just right. I placed myself so that the background was a distant hillside, rather than a bright sky, and the scene was free of other distracting elements.
