New Zealand was an island with no mammals. It wasn’t until the beginning of the 17th and in the 18th century that the sheep were introduced. Unfortunately there was a price to be paid and most of Aotearoa native forests were cleared to create postures for livestock. But not all was lost as the rest is under protection now. Back in the early 80s we had a record amount of sheep, counting at 70 million. Wool was one of our biggest commodities during that time. Today’s approximate count. They’ve declined to 26 million. This painting represents my childhood memories as I used to live on a shared sheep farm. Also I’m part Maori and part Pakeha. Both sides are rich in true Aotearoa culture.
